I don ’t get it- what’s up w ith the T oyota and Honda references in that ad? Were they trying to pass off Geo as a superior  alternative? Or were they trying to build off of the public’s acceptance of those brands?

That’s my guess, but it’s 80s/90s GM so who knows? It was pretty much the automotive version of Numberwang.

Basically, Geo was a brand aimed at people who either wanted an import specifically, or people who didn’t care one way or the other. My take on the commercial is that GM marketing thought referencing Toyota and Honda in the commercial for Geo would give Geo the perception of an import brand in the likes of Toyota and Honda. They wanted the public to lump Geo in with import cars, rather than as domestics.

Ok, that makes sense. Yeah I couldn’t tell if they were going for “ you had a bad experience with Toyota & Honda, buy a Geo instead ” or “ you had a good experience with Toyota & Honda, so you can trust Geo too ”.
